Trainings 2009-2010 We are geared up to train teachers and staff this year on all aspects of implementing quality service-learning projects. Please register on PD Express for any of the sessions listed below. Social Studies – Service-Learning Tuesday 9/22/09 3:45 – 5:30 PM Audience: K-12 teachers/support staff Brief overview of the
Service-Learning Standards for Effective Practice; Examples of service-learning
projects that have been implemented in Saint Paul which have addressed social
studies topics/curriculum. There will be discussion and brainstorming on identifying
community needs, and incorporating students voice in projects. Science – Service-Learning Thursday 9/24/09 3:45 – 5:30 PM Audience K-12
teachers/support staff Brief overview of the
Service-Learning Standards for Effective Practice; Examples of service-learning
projects that have been implemented in Literacy – Service-Learning Monday September 28 3:45 –
5:30 PM Audience K-12
teachers/support staff Brief overview of the
Service-Learning Standards for Effective Practice; Examples of service-learning
projects that have been implemented in Service-Learning 101 Wednesday 10/6/09 8:30
AM – 2:30 PM Audience: K-12
teachers/support staff Class will address how
quality service-learning can improve student achievement, impact attendance,
and create powerful connections between schools and community. Participants will gain working understanding
of the Standards for Effective Practice and receive practical ideas and
resources to assist with implementing service-learning. Service-Learning Grant Writing Monday 10/6/09 2:30 – 3:30 PM Overview of components
necessary in applying for SPPS Community Education Service-Learning Mini
Grants. These grants, up to $500 are
awarded to teachers/staff/students who will initiate service-learning projects
that will engage students in their classroom learning. Receive brief overview of the components of
effective service-learning, and how to involve students in grant writing process. Service-Learning – Youth Voice & Community
Partnerships Thursday 10/22/09 3:45 – 5:15 PM Audience: All Staff K-12 This training will focus on
two of the eight Service-Learning Standards: how to engage youth in ways that
promote leadership while empowering them in their own learning process and explore
how to identify and develop meaningful and reciprocal partnerships with people
and organizations in your community. Learn how teachers in Service-Learning –Diversity and Meaningful Service Wednesday 12/2/09 3:45 – 5:15 PM Audience: K-12 – All Explore ways in which our
perspectives on diversity can impact how we engage in service-learning with
students. Learn strategies for identifying a real need in your community and
how to assess whether students and the community are benefiting from the
project. Service-Learning – Process Monitoring and Reflection Thursday, 2/25/10 3:45 – 5:15 PM Audience: K-12 All Gain ideas for assessing the
success of your service-learning project, as well as student learning. Brainstorm a variety of assessment tools and
discuss the value of reflection throughout the service-learning project. Participants
will receive multiple reflection activity ideas and resources. Service-Learning – Grant Writing for 2010-2011 Tuesday 5/4/10 3:45- 5:15 PM Audience: K-12 All Overview of components
